 Our Organization:

NHEC is the second largest electric utility in New Hampshire, providing service to consumers and businesses in 115 communities throughout the state.  As a member-owned cooperative, serving our members is at the heart of everything we do and every decision we make.

The electric utility industry is currently undergoing enormous change as consumers look for new ways to manage energy costs through distributed energy resources such as solar arrays and battery storage, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles.  These changes present new challenges and opportunities to find ways to meet our members’ evolving expectations and make this an exciting time to work in the electric utility industry. In June 2017, we completed a five-year strategic plan, identifying four areas of strategic focus with actionable goals within those areas to be completed by the end of 2022.  Those four areas of focus are:

  • Transformation of our Business Model to prepare for the widespread adoption of distributed energy resources by our members.


  • Adoption of a Voice of the Member platform to help us better understand and meet our member’s needs and expectations.


  • A focus on enhancing our Organizational Effectiveness by transforming NHEC into an organization that is innovative, nimble, and able to respond more rapidly to the changing needs of our members and the way they lead their lives.


  • Ensuring NHEC’s ongoing Financial Stability through development of a revenue model and associated rates and charges that better reflect the way our members will use our distribution system as they increasingly play a role in managing the energy resources that serve them.


In order to help meet the goals in the strategic plan we identified three key drivers that describe the kind of organization we want to be:

 The Position:

 In order to help meet the goals of the strategic plan, we are looking for an Assistant Controller to support our Broadband entity.  Reporting to the Corporate Controller, this position will supervise, plan, direct, review and monitor accounting functions as assigned by the Corporate Controller, with an emphasis on the Broadband entity.  In addition, they will provide timely and accurate financial reports to the Corporate Controller in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures and support projects to help maintain a strong financial position.  They will also be responsible for accounting procedures, general ledger structure, financial statement preparation and other accounting duties as necessary for NH Broadband LLC (“NHB”).

Specific responsibilities include the following:

  • Affirms that the financial reports reflect accurate and timely information by monitoring the activity posted to the financial records of NHEC and NHB.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the accounting system by evaluating the output of the system, responding to requests for improvements/updates to the system.
  • Keeps informed on regulations concerning the reporting requirements of NHEC and NHB by researching publications, attending workshops, and networking within the industry/governmental agencies.
  • Ensures that the NHB annual inventory of materials and supplies is accomplished in an efficient and accurate manner by coordinating timing, thoroughness, and verification issues with purchasing/warehouse personnel as they monitor the physical taking of the inventory and the subsequent reconciliation.
  • Ensures that all expenditures and receipts are reported properly by monitoring the activity of accounting personnel and their compliance with internal accounting controls.
  • Protects the assets of NHEC and NHB by:
    • Overseeing the input to the General Ledger and by reviewing account reconciliations on a timely basis.
    • Monitoring the accuracy of the input of cost data to the construction records of NHEC and NHB.
    • Reviewing expenditures for accuracy, legitimacy and timeliness of payments.
  • Provides ad-hoc analytical reports to the Corporate Controller and/or the VP of Financial Services/CFO by responding in a timely fashion to requests for information.
  • Supports the financial objectives of NHEC and NHB by participating in the meetings of the Board of the Directors/Board of Managers, or associated board committees, as directed.
  • Supports the cultural goals of NHEC by initiating performance discussions with department employees. This includes discussion related to daily work performance, goals for the department and training needs of the employees.
  • Provides assistance during the periodic release changes to the General Ledger system (ABS) by ensuring that staff is both aware of the release changes and completes proper testing.
  • Supports the strategic goals of NHEC by developing, reporting on, and achieving Balanced Scorecard objectives.
  • Supports the cultural goals of NHEC/NHB by exhibiting self-leadership, developing and maintaining effective working relationships, having a results orientation, being innovative, and seeking feedback.
  • Increases professional and technical knowledge by attending educational classes, reading professional magazines, and participating in professional societies.
  • Improves corporate safety performance by ensuring that staff are provided with dependable, quality materials and protective equipment for themselves as well as their work area, ensuring that Employee Safety Rules and Procedures are complied with and violations acted upon immediately, developing and promoting the department safety plan and recognizing at risk behaviors and conditions and taking corrective actions or providing feedback.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.


The Person:

  • Someone who will be energized and excited about NHEC’s mission and will thrive on the opportunity to enhance the organization.
  • An inquisitive, open mind – someone who is interested in finding creative solutions and new ways to support the organization.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field is required. Additional training in financial management is desirable. MBA a plus.
  • Five to ten years of experience in accounting is preferred. Broadband/cable accounting experience desired. Five plus years of supervisory experience desired.
  • Should be skilled in the areas of organizing, planning, directing, and supervising. Must be capable of meeting established NHEC and NHB goals through development and implementation of policies, practices, and procedures, which particularly influence the accounting functions.  Must be able to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, information on financial accounting.  Must be skilled in motivating, training, and evaluating subordinates in order to obtain the highest degree of productivity, and be responsible for development of individual capabilities.
  • Must have good working knowledge of accounting principles. Exposure to the Uniform System of Accounts for Telecommunications Companies is desirable.




Normal office conditions.  Occasional overtime may be required.  Occasional travel required in the performance of work responsibilities and representation of NHEC at various professional and association meetings.

Assistance with power restoration efforts is required of all employees. It may be required during regular business hours that employees will be assigned functions to support power restoration and for some employees that may be different from their normal duties. In addition, such assistance may require working nights, weekends and holidays which may involve considerable extra hours. In order to meet this working condition, all employees are required to provide a personal phone number where they may be reached after hours. This number will only be used for internal purposes.
