Our Organization:


NHEC is the second largest electric utility in New Hampshire, providing service to consumers and businesses in 115 communities throughout the state. As a member-owned cooperative, serving our members is at the heart of everything we do and every decision we make.


The electric utility industry is currently undergoing enormous change as consumers look for new ways to manage energy costs through distributed energy resources such as solar arrays and battery storage, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles. These changes present new challenges and opportunities to find ways to meet our members’ evolving expectations and make this an exciting time to work in the electric utility industry. In June 2017, we completed a five-year strategic plan, identifying four areas of strategic focus with actionable goals within those areas to be completed by the end of 2022. Those four areas of focus are:


  • Transformation of our Business Model to prepare for the widespread adoption of distributed energy resources by our members.


  • Adoption of a Voice of the Member platform to help us better understand and meet our member’s needs and expectations.


  • A focus on enhancing our Organizational Effectiveness by transforming NHEC into an organization that is innovative, nimble, and able to respond more rapidly to the changing needs of our members and the way they lead their lives.


  • Ensuring NHEC’s ongoing Financial Stability through development of a revenue model and associated rates and charges that better reflect the way our members will use our distribution system as they increasingly play a role in managing the energy resources that serve them.


In order to help meet the goals in the strategic plan we identified three key drivers that describe the kind of organization we want to be:

The Position:


In order to help meet the goals of our strategic plan and achieve our long term strategic vision, we are looking for an Engineering Supervisor. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Engineering Supervisor will be responsible for coordinating and directing projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals, and direct the integrations of technical activities for Engineering operations and the electric distribution system. In addition, provide guidance for the continued development and operation of SCADA, OMS and GIS systems, GPS collection procedures and equipment, CAD map/drafting products and other related systems to ensure the safe, reliable, efficient and effective operation of NHEC’s electrical distribution system as well as providing system performance information for internal and external customers.


Responsibilities Include:


  • Supervising the development and maintenance of transmission and distribution construction standards as necessary to maintain uniform staking and construction procedures and practices.
  • Engineer the installation of electrical transmission and distribution lines, substations and equipment to ensure quality and reliability of service to the member’s at the most economical environmentally acceptable manner.
  • Oversee and perform system protective coordination studies that ensure the safe and reliable operation of NHEC’s electrical distribution system. This includes the development of detailed recommendations and mapping documents detailing the location, size and type of devices to be installed. The Engineering Supervisor shall also coordinate these activities with our energy suppliers, i.e., PSNH, National Grid, etc., to ensure that protective settings of NHEC devices fully coordinate with the upstream devices. The programming of the protective relays and the final testing of the devices prior to being sent to the field will also be supervised by the Engineering Supervisor.
  • Supports the strategic goals of NHEC by developing, achieving and communicating departmental goals and objectives.
  • Supports the cultural goals of NHEC by exhibiting self-leadership, developing and maintaining effective working relationships, having a results orientation, being innovative, and seeking feedback to achieve personal and professional growth.
  • Supports the financial goals of NHEC by assisting in the development of annual departmental operating budgets and monitoring budget for reasonable variances.
  • Increases and maintains current and competent professional and technical knowledge by attending educational classes, reading professional magazines and books, and by participating in professional societies and groups.
  • Assumes responsibilities of the Engineering Department in absence of Manager when requested.
  • Promotes safety performance and awareness by ensuring quality materials and protective equipment is available and utilized and that Employee Safety Rules and Procedures are complied with.
  • Assists with switching operations directed by the Control Center to ensure they are performed in a safe and consistent manner by reviewing switching orders prior to release as applicable.
  • Ensures and improves safety and distribution system reliability and maintainability by analyzing typical line design problems and providing guidelines and standards for uniformity in construction.
  • Ensures proper operation and future needs of NHEC’s electrical system by monitoring of critical parameters, performing periodic system and circuit analysis, programming, testing and troubleshooting (i.e. relays, recloser controls) along with regular review of outage data for optimal performance and trending in equipment failures.
  • Performs and updates system sectionalizing and coordination studies annually or as required by fault current and line loading calculations, fuse and recloser coordination, phasing and motor starting.
  • Supports NHEC guidelines by developing and updating Engineering, GIS and GPS Standards recommending revisions to the Engineering Manager.
  • Supports the Electric Shop and Meter Shop when engineering support is required.
  • Maintains compliance with industry, federal, state and local standards and codes.
  • Assists in the preparation and development of the two year Construction Work Plan and Long Range (5-20 year) System Electric System Planning Studies.
  • Provides technical support in the engineering, design and implementation of electric transmission and distribution system work.
  • Oversees and manages the interrogation of all electric distribution equipment and controls on the electric distribution system for the purpose of system integrity and continuity.
  • Supervises all GIS mapping, CADD drafting and GPS collection activities and consults in the development and maintenance of the GIS/GPS and OMS systems.
  • Supervises the design and modifications to standard and special assembly units and the dispersal of updates/changes in order to maintain uniform staking and construction procedures.
  • Performs other duties as directed or required.


The Person:


  • First and foremost, someone who will be energized and excited about NHEC’s mission and will thrive on the opportunity to enhance an already great organization.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or related field required. Should include solid background in distribution relaying and protection.   Additional training in line design, planning, and material standards is preferred. Training in leadership, management, coaching, planning, and budgeting, preferred. Training in information technology, including networks and database operations, desired. Detailed knowledge of SCADA and OMS systems and additional specialized training in electric utility operations and construction is desirable.
  • A minimum of five years of electrical utility related experience required. Must be proficient with electrical system diagrams, distribution automation technologies, switching procedures, demand side management, and other related Control Center functions. Must have experience leading teams, projects, and employees. Experience must also include the design of underground and overhead distribution and transmission lines, transmission and distribution substations, and applicable facilities. Should have experience in organizing and supervising work groups in coordinating and implementing plans and designs.


Abilities, Skills, and Job Knowledge:

  • Must be able to supervise the engineering staff in designing of outside plant facilities Should be proficient with SCADA, GIS/GPS, OMS and Load Management operations and systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Must have good knowledge of the company rules and requirements. Must have a working knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code, PUC Regulations, and OSHA Regulations. Must have thorough knowledge of electric distribution system operations. Must be familiar with standard business practices, and have a working knowledge of information technology systems and databases. Must understand latest trends in distribution automation technology and be able to implement such technologies in a timely and cost effective manner. Must have a working knowledge in electrical circuit theory. Must have a basic understanding of computer applications with emphasis on AutoCAD and GIS software, GPS, SCADA, OMS and Windows based engineering software for distribution analysis and protection and coordination.


Working Conditions:

  • Individual will be exposed to a wide variety of working conditions, which range from office work to outdoor work.   Will require occasional travel throughout NHEC’s service area. Meetings outside of the normal workday will occasionally be required. Travel with occasional overnight stays may be required for training, meetings, or conferences and seminars. Assistance with power restoration efforts is required of all employees. It may be required during regular business hours that employees will be assigned functions to support power restoration and for some employees that may be different from their normal duties. In addition, such assistance may require working nights, weekends and holidays, which may involve considerable extra hours. In order to meet this working condition, all employees are required to provide a personal phone number where they may be reached after hours. This number will only be used for internal purposes.
