When the weather settles and the power is restored, it is important to keep safety top of mind.
What to Do When the Power Comes Back On
Your power may be back on, but there could still be downed trees and lines in the area. Do not touch any electrical power lines and keep your family and pets away from them. Call (800) 343 6432 to report a downed line, or call 911 if it poses a public safety hazard.
- Check to make sure your oven or stove isn’t on when power is restored.
- Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures higher than 40°F (4°C) for two hours or more (freezer and fridge). When in doubt, throw it out.
- If you have damage to your electric meter or the service line to your home, contact NHEC at (800) 698-2007. NHEC lineworkers will make your service safe and restore power if they can, but damage to the meter housing may need to be repaired by a licensed electrician.
