Understanding Your Bill

Everything You Need to Know About Your Bill

Understanding the different charges on your bill, and what they pay for, is important. That is why we created this guide to walk you through every detail of a typical NHEC bill.

1   Energy Usage Information

This section shows you how much electricity was used each month over the past year, so you can compare your usage over time. This section also shows your average daily electric use in kilowatt hours (kWh). Your average daily use is simply your total usage that billing period, divided by the number of days in that period.

2   Current Electric Charges

Member Service Charge

A fixed monthly fee that all NHEC members pay regardless of their usage. Since all our members need the distribution system available, even if they have little or no usage, we charge a flat fee to help cover the cost of maintaining our system so it is there when you need it.

Delivery Charge

This charge is calculated on the amount of electricity you use each month.  It helps recover the cost of maintaining and operating NHEC’s distribution system that delivers electricity to homes and businesses.

System Benefit Charge

A charge based on your usage that is mandated by the State of NH. The System Benefits Charge funds energy efficiency programs that are available to all NHEC members, and the Electric Assistance Program which provides bill relief for residential members who meet income qualifications.

Regional Access Charge

This charge is calculated on the amount of electricity you use each month.  It pays for the cost of accessing the regional transmission grid, which delivers electricity into NHEC’s system. NHEC does not own transmission lines, so what we pay transmission providers is collected through this charge.

Co-op Power

This volumetric charge pays for the electricity that NHEC purchases from the market on behalf of our members.

3   Summary of Charges

This section shows your previous balance, payments received, any other charges not directly related to your electric usage.

Optional NHEC Foundation

If you are enrolled in the Round Up Program, your monthly electric bill is rounded up to the next dollar with the proceeds benefitting the NHEC Foundation, a charitable organization that makes grants throughout NHEC’s service territory. This line indicates the amount of your monthly contribution. Members have the option to add additional funds above the rounded up to the next dollar.
