Members Reelect Four Incumbents to NHEC Board of Directors

PLYMOUTH, NH – Members of New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC) have returned four incumbents to the company’s board of directors.

A total of seven candidates were running to fill four seats on the 11-member board of directors. Five candidates ran for election to three, 3-year terms on the Board, while two candidates ran for election to one, 1-year term. Election results were announced at NHEC’s Annual Meeting, held June 7 in Plymouth.

Reelected to three-year terms on the board were William Darcy of Benton, Madeline McElaney of Plymouth and Harry Viens of Center Harbor. Reelected to a one-year term on the board was incumbent member Leo Dwyer of Sandwich.

Additionally, NHEC members approved one proposed amendment to the NHEC Code of Bylaws, but a second proposed amendment failed to reach the required supermajority approval of 66% of the votes cast. The first proposed amendment gives the board additional flexibility to efficiently receive, process and count NHEC membership votes that are cast electronically. The second proposed amendment would have eliminated the use of gendered language when referring to individuals in the bylaws.

As a member-owned cooperative, NHEC relies on the active participation of its members to govern and sustain the business. NHEC wishes to thank all members who voted or stood for election. Below are the full results of the 2023 Board of Directors Election.

Candidates Wanted for Board of Directors & Nominating Committee

NHEC is governed by a Board of Directors, which is elected by our members. Each year, a Nominating Committee recommends candidates to run for the Board of Directors. NHEC is seeking members interested in serving on both panels – the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee.

Board of Directors

In 2021, four seats on the 11-member Board of Directors will be up for election to three-year terms. Voting will take place by mail or electronic ballot in May 2021, with new Board members taking their seats at the June annual meeting of members.  NHEC seeks broad representation from a diverse group of individuals and encourages all qualified members to consider running.  You must be a Co-op member in order to run for a position on the Board.  For more information about how to get your name on next year’s ballot, contact Sharon Yeaton at 603-536-8801, or yeatons@nhec.com.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee reviews the qualifications of potential candidates seeking election to the Board of Directors and nominates a slate of candidates to run for the four open seats.  Any Co-op member interested in being part of the candidate selection process for the NHEC Board of Directors is encouraged to apply for a position on the Nominating Committee.  For more information about time requirements and applying to be considered for the Nominating Committee, contact Sharon Yeaton at 603-536-8801, or yeatons@nhec.com.

Three Members Elected to NHEC Board; Ballot Question Fails to Pass

PLYMOUTH, NH – Members of New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC) have elected three members to the company’s Board of Directors and did not adopt a ballot question that would have changed NHEC’s founding documents to include “facilitating access to broadband internet for members” as one of the purposes for which the Co-op was formed.

Voters elected three members to the 11-member Board of Directors. A total of five members were running for election. The three candidates elected by NHEC’s members were Madeline McElaney of Plymouth, William Darcy of Benton, and Leo Dwyer of Sandwich.

Below are the full results of the 2020 Director election.

Madeline McElaney    5,137

William Darcy             4,445

Leo Dwyer                   4,393

Harry Viens                 3,663

Mark Portu                  3,485

By a vote of 4,599 (YES) to 2,539 (NO), the ballot question to change NHEC’s Certificate of Organization did not achieve the required two-thirds approval of members voting in the 2020 election.
